I knit a little bit as a kid, but re-learned around 1992. I do nearly all my knitting continental style on circular needles. I love to teach this speedy method of knitting. As owner of City Knitting, I want you to know how happy we are to be here to serve you.

The shop opened September 1, 2005. Since then, you, our customers, have made it so much fun for all of us. We appreciate your kindness, enthusiasm, talent, and eagerness to try something new.

And, many thanks to this guy:

Congratulations to Ruth for being graduated from the Nursing Program at Calvin College. Ruth will be married this August. (He knits beautifully!)

I love all crafts. Truly, I haven’t yet found a craft I dislike. My mom taught me to knit when I was little, but I didn’t really get into it until the end of high school. I’m the “spring chicken” of the yarn store (20), but will knit with people of all ages. I love to knit for others, and will knit just about anything, but I particularly like to knit baby things for my niece. They’re fast and so cute!

If you want to get your kids crafting, I’m the person to go to. I love teaching those that fall in the 3-5 foot range. Stop in or call the store to set up a class with your son or daughter or niece or neighbor or student or friend…

My high school French teacher knit and I thought it was “majorly cool.” That started me on my knitting adventures forty-five years ago — I am definitely not the “spring chicken” of this yarn shop. And we will leave any other animal designations kindly unsaid…

Other than whatever knitting skills I’ve gained, I’m known in this shop for having some unique expressions in my speech. So if I suggest that you speed up a bit, I might suggest that you “go like Sam-Sixty.” I’ve learned from my English friends that when a task is finished, you say,”and Bob’s your uncle and Fanny’s your aunt.” This adds a bit more color to an already colorful shop.

I love working here and would like to share/help you with your knitting adventures too.

I knit a bit as a young girl but gave it up for crocheting in my college years– it was faster! But in 1996, when staying for a few days with a friend in Washington State who had knit since she was six, I asked her to teach me. She told me to buy a skein of really beautiful wool and size 8 circular needles. I didn’t know there was such a thing at the time. My first project was a hat. I was hooked and have been knitting ever since.

I love knitting gifts for others, especially my grandchildren, and I really enjoy felting. It is such an adventure to see a large, loose project become something fuzzy, thick, lovely and useful. I also enjoy teaching others to knit and have passed on the love of knitting to many of my friends and family.

Not quite sure what to do with a Bachelor’s degree in English, I wandered around Eastown in search of a creative outlet, and poked my head into this craftperson’s paradise. . .and the rest is history. Since I started working at City Knitting in January of 2006, I have learned more than I could ever have imagined about yarn, reading patterns, and of course, creating beautiful things out of fibers (even if it takes more than one try). And the more I learn, the more I realize I still have to learn!

This year has been a socky year for me: for the first six months of 2007, I didn’t have eyes for any other type of project but socks. This coming from someone who thought it was crazy to knit with such tiny yarn and needles. Over the summer, I branched out into a bunch of Elizabeth Zimmerman knitted hats, and some crocheted hats of my own design. My fall fiber quests include a crocheted baby blanket, a few felted slippers, and a pair of fair isle mittens.

Knitting became a passion when I was taught to knit by my friend’s mom the summer before college. My first project was a pair of mittens and then I was off. I knit during chemistry lectures, biology labs, that is: whenever I could. Christmas gifts that year included a pair of socks for my brother that were as big and sturdy as his hunting boots - I didn’t pay attention to gauge.

I have progressed over the years and have also learned to crochet, spin, weave, and quilt. I love to play with fiber any way I can, and am especially excited by color. “Working” at City Knitting is a dream job and I am always inspired by what everyone is creating. I look forward to seeing your next project.
