Socks are a staple to many knitters, and we at City Knitting are duly enthusiastic about knitted footwear. So enthusiastic, in fact, that we’ve decided to devote a page of our website to the proliferation of socks. Yarn
The list below is organized alphabetically by brand, with the different varieties within the brand listed in turn. The brief yarn descriptions refer to the photo below; the green-boxed captions refer to the photo above each box.
Austermann
Spun with aloe vera and jojoba oil, it’s like wearing a foot massage; knits up into varying widths of even stripes (you can make a pair match if you watch the striping pattern when you cast on sock #2):

Brown Sheep
Your basic wool blend sock yarn, available in numerous solid colors and a few heathery tweeds. You’ll need two 50-gram skeins for a pair of adult socks made out of Wildfoote:

Claudia Handpainted Yarn
This delectable fingering weight yarn glides through the fingers in splashes of robust color. Mostly variegated options, but there are also some “almost solid” shades for the picking:

Crystal Palace
We know it’s a little corny, but this stuff sure knits up nicely! Available in 31 colors, including some vibrant solids and wild variegated combinations, “Maizy” is made partly of corn fiber and is a little bit stretchy, making it perfect for summer socks (you’ll need two skeins for a pair):

Lana Grossa
Subtle, random striping (you can’t make the stripes match in a pair); this yarn can be knit up in simple chevron patterns, but intricate lacework could be lost in the shuffle:

Opal
Soft, lightweight socks are perfect for warmer weather. This yarn is delightful and creative: each colorway is based upon a painting by the artist Hundertwasser; there is a thumbprint of the painting on the ball band, and you can see the colors from the painting emerge as you knit the sock:
