Lyra’s Hat Kit, The Golden Compass

Make Your Own Lyra Hat

Many knitters are commenting on the beautiful costuming of the characters in the film, The Golden Compass. There is an especially lovely chunky knitted hat that Lyra wears. I examined it closely, and, after swatching and pattern testing, came up with what I think is a pretty good copy. It has the rolled front edge framing the face, the ridge along the back, and long ties. It’s warm, soft, and a very quick knit. (Two hours start-to-finish, really. I knit mine in 50 minutes.)

I chose a luscious blend of fibers- wool, mohair, and even some hand-painted, to give it the subtle coloring of the one in the film. Hand-wash, let air-dry.

Lyra’s Knitted Hat Pattern/kit costs $22 and includes:

  • a lightly spun blend of four different strands of quality yarn, carefully selected to match Lyra’s look. Yarn is wound for you and is ready to knit. Kit contains enough to knit either size in the pattern.
  • pattern, written in two sizes: child’s medium and child’s large (which can also fit a not-too-big-adult head)

Knitting needles are not included. You’ll need a size US 19 (straights or circular) needle. Call us and we can help set you up with a plastic or bamboo set.
