The Great American Afghan (or pillow squares) a la carte
This gorgeous afghan is knit from 25 unique squares. Your instructor, Kim, has a wealth of knowledge and decades of knitting experience to help you learn all you need to know to knit each of the squares, walking you through each step and introducing you to new techniques. You will finish this project not only with an afghan, but with the skills and confidence to tackle just about any pattern you’ve set your heart on.
So, how do we get through all these squares? Well, it takes some time: class will be held every third Monday of the month, starting in January 2008, and will continue for 2 years!
You may choose to sign up for any number of sessions that you like; simply refer to the schedule below to see when each square is offered. We will not be working the squares in numerical order; rather, the more difficult sessions will be in the winter and fall, and the easier patterns will be scheduled during the warmer months. Sign up for each class individually as desired, and receive a discount for singing up for four at a time.
Prerequisites
You need to be able to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off.
Materials
Your materials must be purchased at City Knitting.
Yarn: Commit to one type of yarn, choosing from worsted weight varieties: Cascade 220, Cascade 220 Superwash, Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece, Cascade Sierra Cotton, or Plymouth Encore. The Great American Afghan book has some guidelines and suggestions for colors, including a suggestion to hold kid seta mohair along with wool, which you may wish to consider. Each square requires an average of about 150 yards, but yardage varies a lot from square to square. 3,600 yards total. About 18 skeins of Cascade 220, or 20 skeins of Cascade Sierra, or 18 skeins of Cotton Fleece.
Needles: Needle size that meets specific gauge for each square, straight or circular, size between US 5 and 8. Each square will be about 12″. You may need a couple of different size needles to meet varying gauges.

Felted Loafer Slipper
It’s a knitted, seamless, magic-looped, knit-in-the-round slipper!
We are going to learn the newest cast on perfect for this project. It’s called Judy’s magic cast on, but we’ll add a small improvement so all your stitches are properly aligned. Then we’ll magic loop our way all the way to the finish! No seams, just two tails to darn in at the end. Once you’ve learned some tricks, this is a very quick slipper project.
You can learn this only at City Knitting because this is Lorilee’s creation. We will complete one slipper in class.
Prerequisites
This is not for beginners: you MUST be comfortable with knit and purl, and have at least some experience with short-row shaping.
Skills you will learn
Magic cast on, magic loop knitting.
Materials
Yarn: 2 strands of bulky wool held together: 3-5 skeins of Ironstone Harmony 100% wool (100 g, 109 yards), OR Nashua Creative Focus Chunky wool/alpaca (100g, 109 yards). Refer to sizes on pattern for yarn selection.

Felted Clogs Class
Learn to make soft, cozy slippers with the popular Fiber Trends pattern; and contribute to a very worthy cause at the same time! During this one-session class you will complete one child-sized felted clog. You will use yarn and needles provided by City Knitting, and the finished product will be donated to Safe Haven Ministries to be given to small children who are living with their mothers in a shelter for victims of domestic violence.
You will leave with the warm feeling that comes from helping others, as well as the skills to knit and felt clogs of any size for yourself or to give as gifts. On the day of class, you will receive a $20 voucher (valid on that day only) to purchase the pattern, yarn, and needles to make clogs on your own. As always, if you run into a question, you may call or come into the shop at any time for help.
Prerequisites
Ability to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off.
Skills you will learn
Following a written pattern, make one, SSK (slip, slip, knit), wrap & turn, picking up stitches, and three-needle bind-off.
Materials
All materials necessary for class will be provided; we’ll give you suggestions for materials you’ll need to take home and make your own clogs.

About Cat Bordhi
Cat Bordhi’s students describe her workshops as inspiring, illuminating, empowering, full of laughter and mind-bogglin. “My years as a middle school teacher taught me to work with different learning styles and personalities,” she explains. “Also, I truly love teaching and love people. Inside every knitter is a bright and child-like intelligence that can truly understand and see how things work, and my job is to nudge the knitter into that warm and welcoming space - and help them feel very much at home there.” Cat teaches all over North America and is the author of some of today’s most innovative knitting books: New Pathways for Sock Knitters, Book One
